Prep is where paint jobs succeed or fail before a drop of finish coat ever goes on. That means cleaning the surface thoroughly, treating any existing mildew or algae growth, sanding and feathering existing edges where old paint has peeled, repairing damaged wood, recaulking all joints and seams, and priming bare wood or any areas where the surface has been cut back to substrate.
Skipping or rushing prep is the single most common cause of premature paint failure. A quality coating applied over dirty, chalky, or improperly prepared surfaces will not adhere correctly. It will fail early, and the failure will look a lot like a product problem even though the product had nothing to do with it.
Timing the Application Right
Paint manufacturers publish application windows for a reason. Temperature minimums, humidity thresholds, and required dry times before rain are not suggestions. They’re specs that the product’s performance depends on.

If more than 20 to 25 percent of a surface is peeling, flaking, or showing adhesion failure, a full repaint is almost always the right call. Painting over widespread adhesion failure just traps moisture between the old coating and the substrate. The new paint will fail in the same places, often faster, because the underlying problem wasn’t addressed.
